In October 2017, our founder, Marcos Ocón, was let go from his job in the private sector. Like many people, his first thought was to look for a new position and update his résumé. That same night, however, a conversation unfolded that would change the course of our lives.

It was Paula, his wife, who asked a question that sounded simple, but would become a life project: 'Why don't we open a travel agency?'

The idea was exciting — and daunting. Marcos had never studied tourism, and the uncertainty was enormous. The questions came immediately: How will we find clients? Where do we even start?

But Paula had something invaluable: unshakable confidence. She knew Marcos's entrepreneurial spirit, and she knew they both shared a deep passion for traveling, discovering new places, and living unforgettable experiences in Costa Rica.

So in November 2017, they took the first step.

It all began in their living room, where they spent hours thinking of a name for their new company. After many ideas, a name was born that felt different, fresh, and full of meaning: Mapea Tours.

The inspiration came from something simple: when people want to find something, they often say 'google it.' Then a word appeared that invited discovery, exploration, and the search for new destinations: Mapealo!

The concept also fit the world of travel perfectly, evoking a map filled with places to know and experiences to live.

Soon after, they found the logo that still represents our essence today: a sun surrounded by rays of light — a symbol of joy, adventure, and new beginnings. Its colors, yellow and orange, reflect the energy, warmth, and enthusiasm with which we welcome every traveler.

On December 25, 2017, we ran our first day tour, destined for Jacó Beach on Costa Rica's Pacific coast.

It was not the success we had imagined. Only two brothers, two friends, and one of their sisters with her husband came along. Financially, the tour left us at a loss, and for a moment we felt the discouragement that so often accompanies those who choose to start something of their own.

We understood, however, that great projects are not built in a single day. Far from giving up, we chose to learn, improve, and take advantage of the enormous potential digital marketing offered to reach more people.

Little by little, the next tours began to fill. Each new traveler was a chance to grow, to learn, and to prove that service, honesty, and passion could open the way.

And that is how the story of Mapea Tours began. What started as a family conversation, a brave decision, and a shared dream continues to grow today with the same enthusiasm that drove us from the very first day.

Because more than selling trips, we believe in creating experiences, connecting people with unforgettable destinations, and accompanying every traveler on an adventure they will remember for a lifetime.
